IMPRESSIONS OF MEN

IMPRESSIONS OF MEN by Richard Kilroy is a 204 pages compact paperback that brings together a selection of the artist’s drawings from the past five years. Presented without chronological order, the book highlights the richness of his drawing practice, sometimes serving as the initial stage for works later developed in colour, other times existing as finished pieces in their own right. A subtle tension between control and restraint defines Kilroy’s work. Meticulously rendered pencil marks are set against expanses of blank paper, deliberately leaving the viewer to question whether the work is intentionally unfinished. This intentional openness allows suggestion to carry equal weight to precision.

Kilroy’s focus on the male form, whether the angle of a cheekbone or the structure of a hand, reveals a fascination with the drama of classical baroque sculpture, yet his translation of it is quiet, minimal, and pared back. Many of these studies carry an implicit exploration of queerness and male sexuality, subtly celebrating desire, intimacy, and the nuanced beauty of the male body. The result is a body of work that feels at once refined and unresolved, imbued with a discreet intensity.

Richard Kilroy is a British artist best known for his highly distinctive fashion drawings. Since emerging in 2010 with a commission for Christian Dior’s Rene Gruau retrospective, he has developed an international reputation for his refined work, often focused on the male form and contemporary menswear. Alongside creating work for brands such as Paul Smith and Ludovic de Saint-Sernin, he has exhibited widely, including at Daniel Cooney Fine Art in New York, Museo ABC in Madrid, the Balenciaga Museum in Getaria and Tom Greyhound in Paris. Additionally, his illustrations are part of the V&A's permanent collection of fashion drawings.
